There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, where gambling den gambling is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect location, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are apparently needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is correct of many borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling hall, features 150 slots and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that contains numerous comforts in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight tables.
