There is an appealing history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is banned. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling den, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga casino is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel compound that contains numerous luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
